Story Behind the Song
A set of German songs written for my friend Marta Phillips to perform. German lends itself to my music because of its dark, consonant laden nature. We originally recorded this in the sancturar of Our Lady of the Wayside but were not pleased with the result. We went into the studio a few weeks later and rerecorded it. One of the cellists had such an overpowering sound that we had to put up an acustical wall around him in order to get the blend just right.
Lyrics
(English translation)
When you slept gently in my arms,
I could hear the sound of your breathing,
In your dreams, you called my name,
And on your lips shown a smile,
It was a full measure of happiness.
And at the end of the hot, wearisome day,
You dispelled my grave concerns,
When I rested on your breast,
And thought no more of the morrow,
It was a full measure of happiness.
