Here's an unabashedly happy "pagan pop" extravaganza of a song, blending wild afro-celtic-ish rhythms with lyrics about the many magical spirals of nature, our universe, and ourselves. Story Behind the Song
If you're a pagan, it's a pretty safe bet that at some point spirals, and more specifically a spiral dance or two, have crossed paths with you. If you're surfing for pagan music, you probably already know this, but for newcomers a spiral dance is a beautifully winding pattern danced by many peoples from time immemorial, and now danced by many modern pagans.
As far as I've experienced, you need about 20 or more happily singing people holding hands and dancing around in a circle (not hard to find at a pagan gathering), and then one person lets go of one hand and cuts slightly inside the perimeter of the circle, leading everyone else behind them in a spiral growing to the centre, at which point the leader reverses direction and starts the spiral going back outwards, as a result of which everyone ends up having a magical opportunity to look everyone else in the face for a brief moment as they whirl by in joy and fun (or sometimes in great peace and gentleness, if that is the feeling of the gathering at that time).
To me a spiral dance and my own version of "Spiral dance" are all about love and connection with our sister and brother beings, and with all living creatures and patterns that populate our universe in ever-exquisite spirals of light and energy. They're everywhere - in the dancing evolutions of our DNA, in the gentle curves of the tiny baby ferns I see as I walk in the forest or the salty shells I gather by the sea, in the ecstatically whirling patterns of stars soaring above me on a hot summer night...
Come and love who are... come and love who we are... that's the feeling I was reaching to bring alive in this song.
Lyrics
SPIRAL DANCE
(by Zorah Staar)
Ferns filling forests, meadow beds so gorgeous
Green leaf and laughing life, curled 'round itself
Seashells and beaches - where the wonder reaches
Sweet fruits of life in spiral perfect shapes
SPIRAL DANCE OF LIFE AND LOVE
AS BELOW, SO IS ABOVE
FERN, SHELL, CELL AND STAR
SPIRAL DANCE OF WHO WE ARE
COME AND SEE WHO YOU ARE
COME AND BE WHO YOU ARE
COME AND LOVE WHO YOU ARE
In busy bodies, biologic wanna-be's
Mystic mambo twisting of D and N and A
Love is the frequency, living blooming harmony
Turning out and turning on tiny cells so true
CHORUS [as above]
Nighttime sky now, hungrier to fly now
Could it be the stardust glowing in my bones?
Fireflies and galaxies, circling ever so free
Never-ending dance of round and round we go
CHORUS [as above]
Come and love who you are
Come and love...
CHORUS [as above]
Come and love who you are
Come and love who you are
