    Story Behind the Song
This is an angry love song about being taken advantage of,
but knowing that karma will fulfill your revenge.

"I was here while you were gone" means that
while my X was incarcerated (it was a long time ago),
I suffered and flourished through some key growing years in
the free world, which led me to realize
how severely he had done me wrong.

But I didn't learn enough to stay away.

What happened upon his being released
was the final straw in him taking everything
    that was special to me.
I wrote the first version of this
song many years after forgiving him for that.
    (This is the second version.)
The first version has much more of a sense of
    still having feelings for him.

This song expresses the anger much more. I try
to be angry so I can move through pain and get to the place where I don't
    care anymore.
I am still up in the air about it.
I could rewrite this song a million times and it
    would never be done.

    Lyrics
You hold back the pain, but I know you're sad
The things you've done to me keep you away
You know I could have gotten back what you took from me
    But I chose to wait
    I know someday you'll pay

Please don't play games, we've played quite enough games
I can see through your act

I know you did it to me
And you know what you do is wrong
You may have done your time
But you have not done mine
    You may be strong
    But I was here
    While you were gone

Too young to know, too hurt to care
    I gave you everything
    Everything I had to give
But while you were gone I was treated right
    I opened my eyes
    I began to live

Please don't deny that you lied, what you did
I can see through you now

I know you did it to me
And you know what you do is wrong
You may have done your time
But you have not done mine
    You may be strong
    But I was here
    While you were gone

    While you were gone

    I grew strong
    While you were gone
You did not learn, no you did not learn
    While you were gone
    I lived on
    While you were gone

    While you were gone
