Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song in 15 minutes while living in Boulder, CO., just a few days prior to making my way back to Los Angeles after a year of soul searching and licking my wounds from a relationship gone bad (gee there's something original)...or just hiding, not sure which. Driving my '67 Mustang to an uncertain future with that former girlfriend (she's married and hopefully happy now) who just happened to be the singer in my previous band. A peculiar heaviness plagued my brain regarding the dichotomy of crazed LA life and the spiritual healing I had come to know roaming through the Rockies. I find that there is a good deal of humor in pain and it's there in the song. This little ditty has become a staple in our live shows due to the free-form jams we can wander into during the solo should we choose to do so.
Lyrics
When I think about the things she said
It makes me just wanna stay in bed
I look out my window see the world outside
The things I see make me wanna cry
But you can't fool me...
No, you can't fool me
Theres a world out there
With flowers and trees
Eagles fly high over me
Dogs playing poker and smoking cigars
I wander from my body but never too far
Because you can't fool me...
No, you cant fool me
The cars on the parkway well, they dont see
That porcupine about to cross the street
He shoots his quills,
Makes their tires go flat
He's on his way so sassy and fat
Sayin you can't fool me...
You know you can't fool me
I said you can't fool me
No you can't fool me
When I hike through the mountains
Or a department store
The creatures all ask
Can we show you some more?
When I fly through the air
With the greatest of ease
I always land right back on my feet...sayin'
You can't fool me...No you can't fool me
I said you can't fool me...
You know you can't fool me
When I fall back to earth and into your arms
The great wide open will protect us from harm
All that we are and all that we'll be
Is here in our hearts for us to see
Because You can't fool me...
No you can't fool me
I said you can't fool me...
You know you can't fool me...
