Story Behind the Song
I tried to write a song that was absolutely Country - country, if you know what I mean. I thought of the cotton on the shoulder of the streets out in the country, and it just grew from there.
Pete says:"Tell us about the treehouse, Jeff!"
Lyrics
Cotton on the shoulder
© 2001, Words & Music by Jeffrey Backus
Chorus:
Lay your head again -
on the cotton on my shoulder
and let go
of that satin around his neck.
Our love was strong back then,
now we both have grown older.
Come back home again,
To the cotton on the shoulder.
1.
We used to watch from our old tree house squirrels run around.
Now you talk about the money that you make in that big town.
You know, it breaks my heart to know you there,
holding somebody new,
When we could sit on our front porch and watch the cotton as it grew.
Bridge
I climbed up to the tree house
For the first time in years,
Hoping to see you from there
With those words still in my ears
