Story Behind the Song
I've always liked "Truck Driving Songs. Sometime in the early 1980s I decided to write one. I don't really know what came first, the title or the line "I ain't driving no slow load". Whichever it was, it just kept growing. When I started building the music, I was looking for a road sound feel with changes of pace appropriate to the lyrics
Lyrics
Truck Driving Fool
I ain't driving no slow load.
Then, again, I'm in no hurry.
At the end of the line, I got no place to go,
But that ain't no cause for worry.
That ain't no cause to worry.
I feel no need of having a home,
Or something, sure to come home to.
I'm not afraid of being alone,
And most of the time I don't have to.
Most of the time I don't have to.
I'm a truck driving fool.
I've got this urge to roam.
I'm a truck driving fool.
The highway is my home.
The highway is my home.
Roaming from Portland to Miami,
From New York, down to Frisco Bay.
I never worry much 'bout Ol' Smoky,
'Cause I usually can stay out of his way.
I usually can stay out of his way.
Now, sometimes, I'll meet a real woman,
Who wants me to come and settle down.
I tell her it's no good 'cause I'm a truck driving fool,
But, I see her, whenever I'm in town.
I see her, whenever I'm in town.
And sometimes, I get weary.
Sometimes the business is slow,
But weariness will pass, when I step on the gas.
There always seems to be another load.
There always seems to be another load.
I'm a truck driving fool.
I've got this urge to roam.
I'm a truck driving fool.
The highway is my home.
The highway is my home.
