Story Behind the Song
We were working on the road back in 1974.
One night, after a lousy gig, we were trying to cram three of us into my tiny MG Midget for the ride back to our hotel. It was raining. It was cold. We were tired. My roommate was loudly complaining about the cramped quarters in the car when the visiting sideman sitting on his lap said,
"Ah, shut-up, Man! We're makin' mem'ries!"
It stuck.
Every time the bus broke down,
every time we felt underpaid,
every time a drunk yelled a request,
any time anything went sour ....
"Shut up, Man! We're makin' mem'ries!"
I got around to writing the song in 1976 while I was working as a single act in cocktail lounges and taverns. It's probably the tune that kept me out of the bigtime all these years, but my family likes it. So here it is!
Lyrics
CHORUS:
I'd rather be makin' mem'ries than livin' them.
The good ol' days were never better than now.
Lookin' over my shoulder at how things used to be is the best way that I know to stagnate me.
1. I remember when I was a rookie on the road.
Seein' all the world there is to see.
The siutations weren't what you could label as "the cream".
But, Lord! The things that fill my memory!
2. There were times whan everyone would want to pack it in.
But they could not see the forest for the trees.
When partners gripe about conditions or where they might be,
Just say, "Shut up, Man! We're makin' memories!"
CHORUS
3. Then there was those two months solid, playin' one night stands.
Set it up! Tear it down!
Tear it down! Set it up! ... all week!
But when I tell that story now I laugh from start to end.
And, retrospectively, it ain't so bleak.
4. And it hasn't been so long now since I've been out on my own.
Playin' towns I hardly could pronounce.
Experience has shown, when there's someplace you'd rather be,
This policy is one you can't renounce!
CHORUS
5. There ain't no way that I could do a desk job 9 to 5.
That kinda life just wasn't meant for me.
The time will come when I will have all kinds of tales to tell
To a grandkid who'll be sittin' on my knee.
6. And I hope there comes a time when I'm a ripe ol' 99,
Even if I've gout and shaky knees,
If someone in the old folks home feels things ain't up to snuff,
I'll say, "Shut up, Man! We're makin' memories!"
CHORUS
