Story Behind the Song
This song just kind of flowed out, which doesn't usually happen for me. I think I was kind of reflecting on the fact that even in the middle of a really fulfilling relationship with someone, you can still experience a really isolating kind of loneliness. Not that it's all bad...it's part of life, I guess. And there's a certain liberating feeling in knowing that maybe we shouldn't always try to escape the fact that we are ultimately alone. It doesn't mean we have to FEEL sad and lonely all the time. It's just more a statement (probably of the obvious) that you can never really share everything with another person. That, and it's a good little rock and roll song.
As for the recording process, this song ended up on the album ("Mama's Kitchen") as more acoustic flavored, mainly, I think, because Tom Sampson, our lead guitarist, played such a kick-ass mandolin part that we didn't want to totally drown it out with loud guitars. But there are some loud guitars on there as well. It was our producer, Dave Russ, who made a rough mix of the song with the more acoustic-flavored touch, and after listening to tapes of that, we decided to go with it, so Dave deserves a lot of credit for the feel of the song as well. Lyrics
I am all alone, in my head, no one's there with me, nothing is said, that I don't hear first for too long, and if you check for signals, they might be gone,
I am all alone, in my mind, no one hears my thoughts, which is, probably best, an endless spiral tryin' to find its way home, tryin' to rest on a roadside stone,
No I can't stop the churnin', no I can't stop the turnin' round, No I can't shake the darkness, following me around,
I am all alone, all by myself, don't like to sound alarms, or call out for help, but on a clear, cold night you can get star-crossed, map in hand you can still get lost,
No I can't see the future, No I can't ditch the past, could your first impression, be my last?
I am all alone, even with you, and we are not so different it's just that we are two, side by side you can miss that mark, bright as day it can be pitch dark,
I am all alone...(repeat)
