    Story Behind the Song
This song was written by Rob, after he, Paul and I were in the library one lazy day thumbing through the Times Book Of The World. Each country in the book had its population compared with the USA (as the biggest economy, the UK (us!) and for some reason, Malawi - which I presume is one (if not the) poorest economy in the world. When looking at the population scales, Malawi didnt even compare to the USA or UK and I just happened to remark "It looks like everybodys dead in Malawi!".

Rob's face immediately lit up and the rest, as they say, is history!

The track was originally recorded using a Roland TR-707 (painstakingly programmed by myself and Paul!) for the drums, synced up to a Korg Poly-800 which provided a bass-line and later (through tape-sync) a (now barely audible) organ riff sequence. Everything was recorded on a Tascam 244 Portastudio with dbx noise reduction.

Next, the main rhythm guitar part was added (played by me), then the lead guitar (me) and vocals (Paul and me) were added on the one take.

    Lyrics
    Everybody's dead in Malawi.
No-one's ever tried to go there.
They all turned left at Gibraltar.
A sign of life there is rare.

    U-turns are plenty in August,
Sea swirls down over the side.
    Lying there, dead in Malawi
Is an octopus who never tried.

They turned to the page in the Atlas
And saw the situation in print.
They said 'You're all dead in Malawi!'
Rice and nuclear arms are the hint.

Rice and nuclear arms are the hint.
