Story Behind the Song
I wrote the main theme - the introductory passage - for this piece in 1997. It was originally played on a regular steel string guitar. I decided to play this in the original compositions section of the 1998 Newcastleton Folk Festival 'contests' - something I normally avoid. Well, the judge Peter Tickell (father of the famous Kate) was very nice about the technique, gave me 18 out of 20, said it reminded him of Dan Ar Bras and by the way the tune was rubbish... he didn't really think it classed as any kind of tune at all, and it was certainly not 'traditional'. Well, since then I've added a couple of further passages and some variations - the extra bits are from experiments with familiar Scottish and Border themes, so they certainly are traditional. And I've moved it on to the tiny Tacoma Papoose guitar, which is similar tio playing a steel string guitar with the cap at 5. However, the neat precision of the instrument and the overall sound is very different. It's been described as 'like a music box' and I like that comparison!
