A look at the night life on the streets of Carlsbad, New Mexico about 2 a.m. in 1978.

    Story Behind the Song
In 1978 I was working for Texas Tech University doing plant survival studies in the New Mexico desert. That meant living in a tent in the desert all summer with three other students. One night we went into Carlsbad and sprung for a motel room, but everyone snored so horribly that I found myself out sitting on the sidewalk at 2 a.m. This song was written that night while I watched the comings and goings of late night in a small town. This version is from my first CD, PERFECTLY STABLE, recorded "almost live" and released in January, 1999.

    Lyrics
I love to sit on a quiet steet corner and dream about playing my guitar.
And watch those few people still up and moving in spite of this ungodly hour.
The boy off the bus, the old man traveling, the Mexican kid with one arm.
And the cops roll by four times an hour to see I'm still doing no harm.

And nobody knows why I'm sitting here. No one but the police seems to care.
I've got no reason, it's just the right season to sit in that warm morning air.

Short man with a bundle, it's probably his laundry, but it just might be all that he owns.
White-collared calico catching beetles for breakfast and sniffing out old chicken bones.
And the futile street light works a directing no one, excepting one cycle in ten.
And the guy that drove past twice just came round another. I recon he'll be by again.

And nobody knows why I'm sitting here. No one but the police seems to care.
I've got no reason, it's just the right season to sit in that warm morning air.
I said, I've got no reason, it's just the right season to sit in that warm morning air.
Sing in that warm morning air.
