Story Behind the Song
I tried to pick up Jane one night at the Court Tavern where we sometimes played. She wasn't having any of it and also told me she didn't like the way I sang. I drove home slightly under the influence and wrote the lyric on an envelope from an unpaid bill laying on the seat of my '72 Eldorado while I was driving. I remember thinking of Charlie Chaplain trying to give the girl on the bench a flower. It was another night when I arrived home safely despite myself. At the recording session I asked Marty Fogel to use a mute on the horn to give me that 1920's feel. The guitar intro is too long but Marc Harris did such a great job I couldn't bring myself to edit it. Marty double tracked Sax solos into a duet. He wanted to redo it but I wouldn't let him. The rythym section is live.
Lyrics
She's the one I want
But she don't want me.
I can't seem to end this misery.
What can I do?
Tell me what can I say?
Got to get that girl to see it my way.
chorus
But she don't want nobody,
She can have anyone around.
She don't want nobody,
Rather be out just fooling around...
Verse2
She's the one I want
But she don't want me.
She can make me shake,
She can set me so free,
But she don't want my flowers
Don't want anything.
And she ain't impressed
With the way that I sing.
chorus
And I been hearing all over town,
Nothing she likes better
Than just fooling around,
But not with me,
She's not with me right now
No not with me
So woe is me right now...
Verse
She's the one I want
But she don't want me.
I still can't seem to end this misery.
What can I do?
Tell me what can I say?
Got to get that girl to see it my way.
chorus
But she don't want nobody,
She can have anyone around.
She don't want nobody,
Rather be out just fooling around...
