Nicodemus Strangelove returns with a nice, new old-time stride tune that tells the story of a fictional dance craze from New Orleans. Good stride work, decent vocals, and an amusing lyric make this song an enjoyable listen to any fan of old time music. It will transform your life, rearrange your closet, and make you feel safe in the knowledge that stride tunes are still being written. -Nicodemus

    Story Behind the Song
Oh my God, this tune took so long to record its not even funny. Due to the limitations of my home studio, I was unable to record the vocal track while playing and recording the piano track. I am not good at doing original tunes (with lyrics) in this way, and it was only after two and a half weeks of recording piano tracks that I finally managed to get the (passable) track that is used here.
I find it next to impossible to play an original tune well (especially when they are as long as this one) without being able to sing as I play it. I think that the cumulative energy when recording both tracks at the same time is much greater and results in a better track (thematically.) That's why there's no real solo on the tune. I was so worn down from playing this tune really well only to drop the first one and a half beats of melody after a solo that I was reduced to just a burning desire to get something a could sing to. Now that I have a small mixer, though, this should no longer be a problem. Expect a different version of this tune within the month.
An Interesting Curiosity: I don't believe that it is possible to waltz to a cakewalk...

    Lyrics
I wanna tell you bout' a little tune
    They have in New Orleans
Oh yes indeed that Ragtime is sweet
    Dancing with my baby
    Doing that Sidestep and Stomp

She was the prettiest flapper baby
    You ever did see
Oh yes indeed in all of your days
    Oh I miss my baby
    And her sweet lovin' ways.

    Here is our
    Sad story it
    Started with Evil Joe
    Vicious and cruel,
    Mean and low one
Day he came and saw my baby
Then he came and took her away

    [Dramatic interlude, lol.]

    I'm really sorry but that's
    Not how it goes;
    I don't know a guy named Joe.

    Here's what really happened
    This one's even sadder:

    Everything is sunny
    When your making money
Least till' the money runs out
That's the way it always goes.

Come back to me baby my weary heart moans
I don't want to dance alone.

    [Interlude]

    Play that lilting melody
    That's what feels
    Good to me

    [Psuedo Breakdown]

I miss my high steppin' sweetheart
That hot lovin baby of mine (sugar!)
Wish that we could do that
    Sweet old romp again
    (Play it piano man)

    Let's do that old time
    Doin' that sidestep and stomp

[Brief scat and madness into solo]

    Everything is sunny
    When your making money
Least till the money runs out

That's the way it always goes
Come back to me baby my weary heart moans
Cause I dont want to dace alone.

[Brief Scat, walking into the sunset]
