Story Behind the Song
This is another road song. It's about just keepin' on keepin' on when you're not really sure that keepin' on is the best idea. It can also be seen as a metaphor for life if you want it to. "Sometimes you have to wait a while before the traffic lets you through." The music is based on a simple bluegrass riff with great drumming by Paul Weinberg and the trick of all tricks, a final chorus modulation.
Lyrics
Asleep at the Wheel
Oh, my lord, I feel I'm goin' down again.
And all I got's a nickel and a tired, drivin' friend.
And he's askin' me politely if I'd mind to take a turn,
For the sun is comin' up and his eyes do feel the burn.
But, I don't have the heart to say I'm not doin' so well.
I'm stuck somewhere in-between heaven and hell.
So, pull the car over to the side of the curb
And go to sleep my friend, I will try to not disturb.
And
Chorus:
Flip the tape, I don't need no brakes,
I just hope I don't make no more mistakes
If I'm drivin' half as bad as I feel.
And, if you see me pass by, stop and say, "Hi."
You'll recognize me 'cause I
Will be the one asleep at the wheel.
Passin' by the border and we're passin' by a church.
All these sudden stops and starts are causin' me to lurch.
My neck is hurtin' and I feel I'm flirtin' with disaster,
But, my eyes keep getting' lower
And the car keeps goin' faster.
So
Chorus
Miles and miles and miles and miles,
Miles and miles and miles and miles,
You know that it don't mean a thing
If you don't let it get to you.
Sometimes, you have to wait awhile
Before the traffic lets you through.
So
Chorus
I'll be the one asleep at the wheel.
