Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song on a cold fall day. I was in a foul mood, left work early, turned on my 4-track and came up with most of the guitar part. The only lyrics I saved were "The mornings are so strange, waking up alone." The guitar was originally fast during all the verses. One day Scott and I played it slow for fun and liked it so much that we re-tracked both guitars for the first and last verses.
Lyrics
Memory paints us together on a bench
Lamplight sipping wine touching hands
Vienna's still a day away but in Venice
We're acrylic confluence
A vacation from a vacation I'm near the end
To go with you I'm a changed man
To stay here by the water
I'm lost again
So I wait on over by the plane
Picturing all the ways
You might bump into me
Out here all alone
And runway pacing
I want to be allowed to wait for you
Not to keep you just inside a songline
Where I could stay
Intimate and shaping
The mornings are so strange, waking up alone
It's making me slow with my days
I tell myself the distance will be fine
Do you ever think you see me
Asleep on my side of the bed
Reach out and finger-trace
The old contours of my head
There's a phone on the plane and
Drifting I play with your voice
Hope is pushing these moments into days
Soon you'll call just to say Hey
Let's you and me go for a night drive
We'll work our ways back into each other
If we slip a bit that's okay
In good time we'll recover
The mornings are so strange, waking up alone
It's making me slow with my days
I tell myself the distance will be fine
Do you ever think you see me
Asleep on my side of the bed
Reach out and finger-trace
The old contours of my head
I laugh about how you would run and hide
I'd look for hours
Though I knew just where to find you
Then I hold my breath and you grab my leg
Until crashing
Then kisses all day
So forget me
Go on please
Forget me
Make it easy
I get there step inside
So I guess you really didn't stop me
Well, I'm away in a way always packing
Settle in a bit already letters written
"Old friend, I'm in the middle of new
head still spinning, sky still blue.
I'm okay -- cat to calm,
neighbor to exchange a word or two in passing. I miss all of you
My old jigsaw view of you."
The mornings are so strange, waking up alone
It's making me slow with my days
I tell myself the distance will be fine
Do you ever think you see me
Asleep on my side of the bed
Reach out and finger-trace
The old contours of my head
Then scatter me like heat
From a touch underwater
I laugh about how you would run and hide
I'd look for hours
Though I knew just where to find you
Then I hold my breath and you grab my leg
Until crashing
Then kisses all day
So forget me
Go on please
Forget me
Make it easy
Venice
4 am in Venice
I'm alive in Venice
Stagger away from Venice
I'll make it back some day
