Story Behind the Song
My first performance at the Intel Benefit show in Arizona 1996. I was slated to do 3 poems. One was about snow falling, one was about growing older and dying unfulfilled -- neither of them would probably stay in people's memory. After participating in a poetry slam a few weeks before the show, I was inspired to do a "funny" poem. Here's the result with appropriate loony music background.
All Synth is Korg01w. Vocals were recorded with a AKG414B-ULS through a Rolls RP520 Preamp direct to hard disk. Mastered using Creamware's TripleDAT DAW.
Lyrics
To be a loaf of bread would, I think, be sublime
Not harvest grain or honey wheat, no, not even country rye
The processed squishy whitebread -- that's what I would want to be
Because it's absolutely garunteed nutrition free!
I'd sit at first, just after birth, upon a cooling rack
Then subdivide by slicing knives and end up in a sack
I'd loaf around all day with other whitebreads on the shelf
Saying "Grab some dough! I'm good to go! You could eat me all yourself!"
Wad me in a little ball or spread me thick with jam
Make me be a BLT or pile me high with ham
'Cause I'm here to please ya, steak-n-cheese ya, play with your bologna
But if you're bringing Spam my way, I'll soon enough disown ya
So next time you shop why don't you stop in my grocerie aisle
You'll be glad you did when you see your kids with their PB&J smiles
No, not pita, cornbread, sourdough, or pumpernickel will due
Because it's whitebread, whitebread, whitebread, whitebread, whitebread, I love you!
