Story Behind the Song
This is Bruce and Henry collaboration. Bruce played the rhythm guitar and bass, and sequenced the drums, while Henry wrote the words and melody. Clayton Dyess plays lead guitar, and Scott Lemond added sax. We've been criticized for being real depressos with this song, but really it's just a VOICE, not what we truly think -- the musical equivalent of a dramatic monolog. Obviously, the dude in this song is pretty messed up and negative, but there is sort of a lift and hope at the end.
Lyrics
When you try to remember the smell of her hair
on a cool dry evening when no one is there
memories are distrusted and soon blow away
give up till tomorrow or some other day
listen to the cold wind blowing on its own way
and the winter fog whispering as it crosses the bay
your soul just can't stop talking
but can't remember how to pray
ask the night what it's trying to say
Take a walk in the boneyard
take a walk with me
take a walk in the boneyard
bout a quarter to three
Love is a demon, it's lust that's your friend
love is monster that betrays you in the end
it will break out all your windows
and kick in your doors
hold your children for ransom
and not tell you what for
it will find you, it will kill you
where ever you might hide
everything you heard about it was a lie
There's a fire on the ocean and mist in your eyes
there's a rain on the desert and truth in these lies
you watched while she was leaving and felt good for awhile
what's 22 blocks, what's 2000 miles
but there's a voice from the sand dunes
across the road from the hill
it's sweet and it's cool and it's sad sometimes
and you can never get your fill
you might remember it from somewhere
I think you can if you will
after midnight when the breezes are still
Take a walk in the boneyard
take a walk with me
