Story Behind the Song
The lyrics to "Eye of the Storm" were originally written on December 21, 1993, and the song was recorded over a couple of days in January 1994 in Kirksville, Missouri, in the attic of the house I was renting with some college friends. At the time I was very interested in a good friend of mine, but wasn't sure if she felt the same about me. The song is a rock ballad that plays on those emotions and the tension between wanting to tell someone how you feel about them and the risk of throwing away a great friendship, because from that point on everything is different. Over time the title has changed from "Emotional Storm" to "Mixed Emotions" to the current "Eye of the Storm." Oh yeah, the subject of the song has been my wife since May 1995, so I guess it worked out!
Lyrics
Eye of the Storm
As the sun sets on the horizon
night falls and I think of you alone
I stare at your picture on my wall for hours
wondering if I'm on your mind as well
Everytime we talk I think I'll say how I feel
But I just force a smile and only say goodbye
The road of life twists and turns in ways I'll have to wait and see
But if I can have one thing my way, you'll walk that road with me
A love to keep you safe and warm, held tightly in the eye of the storm
Maybe I shouldn't be so afraid to ask
I've heard rumors that you want me too
But if I take the chance and you don't feel the same
How could I stand to face you again?
Under this cool exterior lies a powder keg of passion
One more smile and I'm sure my heart will break
Thinking about you constantly, it's love I have to believe
I only wish I could tell you, but instead I always leave
