Story Behind the Song
Kill Our Own Kind is all over the shop and has no single lyrical theme. The
first half of the first verse is just imagery really. Although I guess
there's a melancholy to them. A sense of lost opportunity maybe...I don't know.
The line about the basslines is about the groove in music. I think I was
listening tio a bit of Creation Rebel and Massive Attack at the time. Getting
off on deep dubby basslines. And I think the bass hits you directly in your
nether regions, hence the sexual references. And I guess the from behind line
means it's dirty, intense sex which I think that whole funk/groove/dub thing is
obsessed with. 'This is what we wished for' relates back to that. Having a life
full of good music & passion and 'soul food' and the 'wish' also relates to the
next line about 'General Holmes Drive' which is the road that goes under one of
the runways at Sydney Airport. If a plane is on top of the runway whilst I'm
driving under then my girlfriend always makes a wish. I grew up about 5 minutes
from this tunnel so it also carries a lot of emotional weight with me. Whenever
I'm under it I'm almost in my hometown. It's right on Botany Bay hence the
petroleum slicks on the incoming tide. The chorus is just about what a selfish
prick I am in pursuit of my own pleasure. Killing our own kind is to kill off
that part of yourself that is out for itself. I'm fairly drawn to Eastern
philosophy, Tao, Buddhism and one of their main tenets is the killing of off
passion. Something I find impossible to do but I have the utmost respect for
those with the discipline to do so. 'Kill our own Kind' also refers to killing
off sanctimonious 'inner-city, artist - lefty' types like myself. Sometimes you
just get sick of your own bullshit and those you are associated with. Of course
other times you'll die for them.
Next verse is about wanting to be a rock n roll star - 'fame & disgrace'. But
it's about more than that. After the chorus apologises for wallowing in hedonism
the verse asks to be allowed to wallow in it and make our own mistakes. This
pretty much reflects the state of my mind which is in constant conflict with
itself on this issue and others. But I think there's a creeping conservatism
coming back into the community re sex, drugs, art, cinema, music and I think it's
insidious and shitty. Adults should be allowed to make their own mistakes.
Certainly where recreation and entertainment are concerned. That's what the
whole 'living in fear of a spelling mistake' line refers to.
The start of the middle 8 is just a pay out on being over 30 and playing music.
The next line about geniuses shitting me to tears because they don't watch the
footy is a bit facetious I guess. What I'm referring to is cultural snobs who
claim that art & sport are mutually excusive which is utter bullshit. I'm an
avid league and cricket follower and these sports played at their peak move me
just as much as the best that Van Morrison or Sparklehorse or Talk Talk or Mary
Margaret O' Hara or the Dirty Three or Updike or Delilo or Scorcese or
Bertolucci can offer me. I don't like purists on either side of the fence.
There's room for everyone.
Musically this is pretty simple. It grew out of that descending chordal pattern
at the start. The lyrics were written first and it was played by the band pretty
much as written. Jason didn't do too much with this mix. It's pretty much just
the band playing. The only things added in the mix were the chimes in the first
verse and the backward guitar track coming out of the first chorus. It's just a
simple pop rock song but I think it's really strong melodically. I think that's
why we chose it as the first track. We thought it would sound good coming out of
the radio.
We've got cello on both these tracks live now and we may well add the cello part
on this recording before it's officially released. Which we hope isn't too far
off.
Lyrics
Kill Our Own Kind (C devil may care 1998)
it's pulling in again
i lost this somewhere in a dream
on stilts overlooking a vacant cloud land
pining for a lend of all those good vibrations
opened a small soul food store in the quicksand
some people write bass lines
that are like fucking from behind
hands caressing chests & couples coming at the same time
this is what we wished for
as the plane hit general holmes drive
& the petroleum slicks did dance on the incoming tide
C
baby kiss your hedonist boyfriend
its keeping him alive
his little pleasure chest he defends
with embarrassing tactless pride
lets kill our own kind
now allow us to continue
on our search for fame and disgrace
& the right of a man to fall flat on his face
this city don't write letters
lives in fear of a spelling mistake
i ain't willing to go to my grave
just to avoid a little debate
C
baby kiss your hedonist boyfriend
its keeping him alive
his little pleasure chest he defends
with embarrassing tactless pride
lets kill our own kind
now some lame assed bastard is searching for
the perfect chord
while some fresh faced kid has written his latest hit
on the back of a skate board
geniuses are few and far between and they generally shit me to tears
cause they don't watch the football and they cant handle their beers
