Story Behind the Song
Parke Mainz is a songwriter and 13 year veteran of the Dallas (Texas) Fire Department. He performs with the festival rock band "HotHouse!" comprised primarily of Dallas Firefighters. After hearing of the tragic fire in Worcester, MA, Parke decided to write a song not about heroics, but rather the day-to-day life of a family man who happens to work as a firefighter... how the routine of going to work each shift can cause anyone to forget that all firefighters are only one tragic call away from death, and how we should never take that for granted.
Brent Rogers is a songwriter, musician, independent record producer in Portland, OR and a retired veteran of the Dallas Fire Department. He left the Department in 1998 to pursue music full time, but remained in contact with his friends at DFD. When contacted by Parke in September, 2000 and asked to sing the first version of "Last Goodbye," Brent felt that a brand new collaborative rendition of the song would be a wonderful way to pay tribute to the brothers in Worcester as well as to bring closure to his own eleven-year career in the fire service. With Parke's approval, he brought in fellow Portlander, published lyricist Karen Kantor, to work on the tune, unaware that she, herself, had been a fire survivor.
Karen Kantor lived in Cambridge, MA, during the 1970's. She produced the hit shows "The Club" and "The All Night Strut!" in Boston and was a frequent visitor to Worcester. Ironically, in New Jersey, 1957, at the age of five, Karen survived a fire that took the life of her nine-year-old sister, Nancy. To this day, she remembers the feeling of her "lungs being on fire" and being unable get air that cold November night. Karen wants to thank Firefighters and Rescue Workers all over the world for the risks they take, every day, to save our lives.
Parke, Brent and Karen would like to express their appreciation and thanks to each of the talented musicians and singers who contributed their time for this project. Greatest thanks goes to Dan Decker of Sound Impressions Studios, Portland, OR for donating engineering time as well as the 40+ hours of studio time required to complete this recording.
