Story Behind the Song
Very simply - I was listening to a book on tape in the car. It was on different Buddhist teachings. One described a tree, with deep roots, that remained standing strong even though a storm ripped at its leaves and branches. The moral was, to have deep spiritual and emotional roots so that life's trouble would not uproot you. Dan Orias came along and wrote the country music for it, and added the fantastic harmonica part.

How To Be Strong

My emotions, like leaves on a tree
are ripped to shreds in this violent storm
I must run to find some shelter.
Shelter to protect me from harm
As I look into your dark eyes,
I see flashes of bright lightening
Chills run up and down my spine,
The howl of the wind is so frightening
How to be strong, when the river is churning
How to be strong, in the midst of a storm
How to be strong, when you feel like nothing
How to be strong, How to be strong
There's a heartbreak around the corner,
I don't want to turn, I'm afraid what I'll face
I tried to run from the noise and confusion
but I can't hide, can't escape this place
Because it's a bad, bad, bad situation,
I'm in trouble no matter what I do
I keep meeting up with resistance,
and the resistance is you
How to be strong, when the river is churning
How to be strong, in the midst of a storm
How to be strong, when you feel like nothing
How to be strong, How to be strong
And the wind is tearing at the branches,
The tree holds firm when the roots are deep
The tree holds firm when the roots are deep
Can't you see we're in an uphill battle
and there's trouble no matter what we do
You keep meeting up with resistance,
and the resistance is you
How to be strong, when the river is churning
How to be strong, in the midst of a storm
How to be strong, when you feel like nothing
How to be strong, How to be strong
