Story Behind the Song
I started writing this as an anti-religion song, and then I had a revelation.
Lyrics
There've been more people killed in the name of god
than the devil could ever hope.
We turn ploughshares into swords, and guns,
and crosses, and hangin' ropes.
Everybody wants to stake their claim on what
cannot be defined.
This is not what Jesus meant to say with the
water and the wine.
My God is Truth.
And the Truth is everywhere.
Except in religion.
Well if all the sages of history,
came together for one day.
And set aside all their differences, just
long enough to pray.
There'd be no hate, or powerplay. No
politics of name.
'Cause the truth be told, since days of old,
the message has always been the same
My God is Truth.
And the Truth is everywhere.
What about religion.
Well one man faces east to pray.
One man faces west.
The righteous turn up their nose to most
and their backs on all the rest.
And I may be a hypocrite,
but a blind man I am not.
I can see the lies in the writing on the temple walls,
but sometimes a fall prophet's all I got.
My God is Truth.
And the Truth is everywhere.
Maybe even religion.
Well the truth is what is left when there is
no-one there to see.
It causes pain, goes by many names,
It's what will set you free.
I never thought I'd ever see the day when I'd
begin to understand.
I can sit around pointin' my finger at a better way, but
on the other hand
My God is Truth.
And the Truth is everywhere.
I guess even religion.
---
My God is Truth, I say it again,
It don't matter which church I'm in.
'Cause the message don't depend on the prophet's name,
just as long as you're listenin'...
My God is Truth...
