Story Behind the Song
"I had driven a zillion miles on this stretch of highway, IH35, and used it in a lyric. I was playing around and singing it over and over when Shelly told me she felt I was singing about a dead person ... a ghost locked in a pattern. The rest came easy."
Lyrics
Interstate
On I-35 just outside the city of St. Paul
I lost my life, between the bar signs and the headlights
And oh my god honey, I'm lyin in that black dirty snow
From Duluth to the streets of Loredo
back again until I reach Minnesota
I'll drive this Interstate until its my friend
Twenty thousand times again and again
I wanna know its every crood every bend
This never ends
One two buckle my shoe, dreaming until death do us part
Payphone promises broken, babe we'll hit the big time next year
Now I'm so cold honey, there is nothing that can dull the pain,
that tears my silent heart
From Duluth to the streets of Loredo
back again until I reach Minnesota
