Story Behind the Song
"Downtown, there is a corner where migrant workers congregate to get day-work. I used to drive a really beat-up old chevy truck, so when I'd drive by this corner, they'd come out into the street looking to me for work. Then I saw a story on 60 Minutes about how these women in the 3rd world were being conned into buying Avon products in order to look "younger" (a.k.a. like young, white models). There's more ... you can write me at colin@colinleyden.com to get the scoop."
Lyrics
American Fable
East meets West which one is best I'm glued to my T.V. set,
The crowd they cheer and sip imported beer its anybody's bet.
And Avon's in the jungle as the ancient ruins crumble,
for a pocket full of gold and all the lipstick that can be sold.
Vote for me I'll keep you free from life's unpleasantry,
And all your stuff it's not enough their are no guaruntees.
And downtown there's a corner where the middle class are foriegners
and migrants sell their labor for a piece of the american fable.
And if I choke on my own smoke, I'll blame it on conspiracy,
Cause the truth ain't fair and it's not out there, just turn off your T.V.
And alien abductions happening at highway junctions,
there escape so we don't talk about, the things that we don't talk about
