Lyrics
The Ballad of Thirty Five Cents
(GENE W. EVANS)
I went out to visit a relative of mine in an old run down nursing home
I saw this old man standing by the front door, looking kinda sad and all alone
Now he was stopping everybody, that happened by his way
First he'd cough to get their attention, then he'd politely say
Give me 35 cents please
That's all I need to buy a coke
Well how about a dollar then
To tell the truth I'm broke
You got any cigarettes
I sure do need a smoke
Won't you give me 35 cents please
So I can buy a coke
I thought, here's a man that long ago was his mother's pride and joy
Some young girl's sweetheart, an all American soldier boy
Never in his wildest dreams did he think he'd end up broke and all alone
Begging for 35 cents, and a coke, in a shabby nursing home
He said, I used to be somebody, mister, why I was really on a roll
I had a big old house, fancy car, and a wife as good as gold
But I guess I messed up somehow and wound up broke, sick and all alone
And finally found myself here in this shabby nursing home
Then I woke up, and I realized I had fell asleep
I rubbed my eyes and shook my head as I stumbled to my feet
I said to myself, I wonder why that dream won't leave me alone
Then I took my place at the front door of that shabby nursing home
Give me 35 cents please
That's all I need to buy a coke
Well how about a dollar then
To tell the truth I'm broke
You got any cigarettes
I sure do need a smoke
Won't you give me 35 cents please
So I can buy a coke
