Story Behind the Song
This song was inspired by all those tear-jerker country ballads that tell of lost love and general despair. It pretty much came to me all at once: chorus first, then the verses. This track was recorded with my Ditch Lily partner, Mark Weierman, with "Mississippi" Ken Clark on the bass, and a wonderfully funny violin track by Kelly Church.
Lyrics
Cryin' on My Pizza
(c)1999 by Joe Kretschmer, ASCAP
It was our regular Friday rendevous.
Then you called me on the telephone, and told me we were through.
The doorbell reminded me, I'd ordered pizza for delivery,
But when I opened up that box, I turned that pie to stew
[chorus]
(Because) I'm crying on my pizza over you.
What was once crispy crust, now just tastes like glue.
And all I got to ease my loss is watery tomato sauce
From crying on my pizza over you.
That telephone call confirmed all my fears.
And now those little anchovies are swimming in my tears.
When they sliced that pizza apart, they rolled that knife right through my heart,
And now all I have to ease the pain is beers. [chorus: Oh, I'm]
And now when I look down upon the cheese,
The smell of oregano just brings back memories.
The grease that floating on the top tells me my pain will never stop,
And I'll have leftover slices I can't freeze. [chorus: Because I'm]
