Story Behind the Song
The song is a commentary on the Ibo Tribe- an industrious proud people of Nigeria, whose essential identity has been diminished by Political persecution and Genocide-basically this song is a wake-up call to the Ibo to get back on their feet and reclaim their place in the scheme of things.
The word Ikenga is one of the Symbols of the Ibo Tribe denoting strength, induetry, pride and independence.
Lyrics
Ikenga Ikenga O Ikenga. You shall yet see your Sunrise Ikenga you shall yet see your Sunrise.-Chorus
The story goes like this - there lived a breed of men strong, proud and industrious but a just but futile conflict robbed you of your place in history and you retreated into your shell defeated and dejected, sadly today
you are a shadow of your trueself. The old man said Igbo enwegh Eze (The Ibos have no King)but today money has become your King your God- yeah children of a lesser God.
Chorus
Yes and the story continues knowledge and it's pursuit are scorned and the base has been elevated to the level of God- my message is simple -I am not afraid, why? Ndigbo are too great a people to be down forever we shall rise again, we shall yet see our sunrise - Ikenga Sunrise, Ikenga Sunrise. I speak not in vain Ikenga and this is why...Greatness is in the blood of every Igbo man you do not acquire it, it was imbued in you, it is part of your make up, take your destiny with both hands seize back that greatness that is yours, knowledge was your forte, industry was your strength it is not too late to get back to whre we were Ikenga Igbo ga dilili (The Ibos shall survive) Over and out.
