Story Behind the Song
This is the original version of Cool River Sally recorded back in 1998.
We had a great time producing this song. We covered all the parts between
the two of us. Mitch is playing the guitar and bass and I am doing the keys, vocals and the whistle.
It took us about 6 hours (with many breaks) to record and another 5 hours (with many more breaks) to mix.
I love the water sounds that go through the whole song. That's my favorite part! -Dolly
Lyrics
Cool River Sally
Music and Lyrics: M. Rappaport/D. Rappaport
Cool River Sally was just seventeen years old
When she left the town of Mason with all that she could hold
She had a backpack, a guitar, and some clothes
Headed for Gulf waters, where the cool water flows
Sally met Joseph carrying a fishin' pole
He asked Sally for her name, together they walked down the road
Turns out Joe could catch 'em while Sally lit the fire
They'd reach the cool, cool river and then they would retire
Listen to the sound of the cool, cool river
Cool River Sally, she never went to school
When you see the glimmer of the cool, cool, river
Cool River Sally is a cool river jewel
Twenty days passed and they traveled due South
When the road got muddy, Sally smiled and said, "At last!"
They put their whole life savings down on the line
And when the night was over they'd had themselves a time
Sally played sweet guitar; her voice sang cool river songs
Joe listened in, rubbed his chin, and said, "I'll be back by dawn."
He returned the next day with a man in a three-piece suit, who said,
"I'm gonna make you a star girl. We'll all make a bundle of loot!"
Listen to the sound of the cool, cool river
Cool River Sally, she never went to school
When you see the glimmer of the cool, cool, river
Cool River Sally is a cool river jewel
Sally wasn't leaving. She'd felt the cool river water
So the record guy thought he should sweeten up the offer
But no amount of money would do
No big 'ole house in Nashville, not for Sally Cool
Joe stuck around because he loved his Cool River Sally
Each day he'd walk into town whistling her tunes
They got married down by the water, with the waves as a witness
A lifetime honeymoon
Listen to the sound of the cool, cool river
Cool River Sally, she never went to school
When you see the glimmer of the cool, cool, river
Cool River Sally is a cool river jewel
