Story Behind the Song
I am sure that you will recognize the Columbine incident as the inspiration for this song. I was in the car with my kids, listening to the radio, when I heard that Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, would be doing a speaking engagement at a local church. Knowing what this man had lost, perhaps as a direct result of raising his daughter to be a bold believer, and seeing my own kids in the backseat, was all it took to spark this song. I think I finished it that night.
While I was writing this song,
the truth of the story that
inspired it was called into
question. While I am not
convinced by the doubters--and
suppose the whole truth may
never be known in this life--
please remember that people less
newsworthy than American high
school students are being
persecuted, and dying, for their
faith in Christ all around the
world even now.
Lyrics
"Do you believe in God?" were the last words she ever heard
I wonder if she knew the answer would be heard around the world
A soul that seemed too young to face the horrors that she saw
When death is looking down at you, how do you find the strength to serve the
highest call
CHORUS
She said "Yes", she said "yes", and I pray my kids could do the same, yet
sometimes I fear they would
She said "Yes", she said "yes", and the question still is haunting mecould I say
"Yes"
"Do you believe in God?", and then he asked her "Why?"
He pulled the trigger then, was he afraid of her reply?
But in that single moment the truth had won the day
One word means nothing, one word means everything
CHORUS
Yes to forgiveness, yes to life anew, yes to the peace you bring when we call on you
Yes to life eternal, yes to boundless grace, yes to the joy we'll find when at last we
see your face
But must we face the struggle, must we endure the pain that comes when we follow
him, when we take on his name?
CHORUS
