Story Behind the Song
This song was inspired by the experience of living in a small town in Montana effected by the forest fires and smoke. This song was also influenced by the Hells Angels' annual convention to Missoula, Montana that same summer. The Hells Angels' visit led to a town rally and police violence. This event accompanied with the ever-present smoke and danger from the forest fires created a very strange and somewhat mysttical environment. The last line of the song, "the line of separation will burn down completely," has a double meaning, referring both to the fires that were getting closer and closer to the town of Missoula, and to the conflict between the citizens of Missoula and the police force. That line of separation is the line between fire and non-fire, and that between violence and non-violence.
