Story Behind the Song
Dan was so moved by the plight of young Anne Frank that he felt the necessity to put his feelings and emotion to music. The sentiment of this song was written from the perspective of the way she coped during such physical anguish and emotionally turbulent times by putting in words "her ideals, her thoughts, her cherished dreams" in her diary that she always started off, Dear Kitty.
The backing instruments were brought together to give the song a feel of the era, yet keep the overall sound contemporary to reflect that the atrocities are not so different today as they were during the second World War. "Oh Annie, if you could see us now..."
Lyrics
Where's Annie?
I hear the approaching thunder,
yet the sun still shines...
She was just a little girl thinking all her dreams will come true
Just like any other girl there's nothing she can't do
But she had to slip away, disappear into the night
She had to stole away, her bloodline wasn't right
Oh, who can help her now, who can help her now?
Oh, who can help her now, who can help her now?
Where's Annie? Where'd they take Annie?
Oh Annie, are you alone?
Look at nature through dirty curtains
You cannot sleep without your pillow being wet from the tears
Your ideals, your dreams, and cherished hope... just shattered
You cry out and give vent to the misery
Where's Annie? Where'd they take Annie?
Oh Annie are you alone?
Time heals all wounds, but who can help her now, who can help her if time stands still?
Dear Kitty, you're the only one, you're the chosen one, help her now
On top of the world, or deep in dispair, it's only you there Dear Kitty
Paper is patient, it's only you, you're the only one Dear Kitty
Dear Kitty, you're the only one, you're the only one Dear Kitty,
Dear Kitty you're the only one, you're the only one
Oh Annie, what'd they do Annie?
Oh Annie, if you could see us now...
