Story Behind the Song
When I was a Senior in High School, a friend of mine died in a swimming accident. It seems that God uses tragedies like this to remind us of our own mortality, and dependence upon Him. He also reminds us that we have a commission to fulfill, and that time is not a luxury in fulfilling it. I saw that friend every day in school -- I had classes with him, saw him in the halls, played sports with him, but I can't remember anytime that I ever shared the Good news of Jesus Christ with him. I guess I always thought there would be plenty of time. As the song indicates, however, time would not wait for me, and I can only hope that someone else shared with him before his time was up. I had a duty, not only to tell, but also to live the good news. Perhaps if I had lived my life as an example, HE would have asked ME about the hope that is in me, and I could have shared with him then. I have to face, daily, the very real possibility that he is Hell right now because I failed in my duty to my Savior. The idea of this song is not to reflect on the "if only" aspect, but to create a positive attitude of change for the future. Remember that we have a duty to show the world by example what Christ has done in our lives, so that they, in their life-long search for happiness in this world (see "Chasing the Wind") would look to us, and we could show them that the only real happiness is in Jesus Christ. -- Coe Perry
Lyrics
Verse 1: I was there with him
I saw him breathing
And when I look away
I didn't see him go down
When I turned around
He was lying there on the ground
I cried, "Oh God! What can I do?"
Verse 2: Then I heard a voice
It said, "He's made the choice
He's just entered eternity"
And before it went away
It said, "I'll come again some day
Come to take all my people away"
Chorus: Time waits for no man
Time keeps on going
Ooh, when will you see?
Where will you spend eternity?
Verse 3: So if you've lost a friend
And it feels like there's no end to the pain
Just call the One -- the One who sent His Son
He will make sunshine out of the rain.
Chorus
Chorus 2: Time waits for no man
Time keeps on going
Ooh, Heaven or Hell
Which will it be?
Verse 4: Jesus bled and died for you
Many times He's cried for you
Just accept Him now -- you'll see
In Heaven with Him you'll reign eternally
But only you can make the choice
Only you will have the voice to say
"Oh, please God save me!"
Chorus
Chorus 2
Chorus 3: Time waits for no man
Time keeps on going
What if this should happen to you?
What would you do? Where would you spend eternity?
