Story Behind the Song
This song came about during a time of personal renewal, when I felt like I wasn't worth anything to God, and could never be reconciled to Him. It closely follows the theme of the famous "Footsteps in the Sand" poem. In it, the author wonders why he was alone during the most difficult times of his life, and in the end Jesus explains that the places where only one set of footprints can be seen are "where I carried you." Jesus said, "I will NEVER leave you, or forsake you, and while its true that I have nothing to OFFER God, I am worth the blood of His Son, and He reminded me of that in a powerful way through this song. -- Coe Perry
Lyrics
Verse 1: I saw an old friend in your eyes tonight
A friend I haven't seen in a while
I saw a friend I thought was gone before tonight
Made me feel just like a child
Bridge 1: Then finally I asked you
Where've you been? Where'd you go?
You didn't have to answer
I said ,"I already know."
You've been here right beside me
Standing with me all the time
It was me who ran away, dear Lord
Me who left you behind."
Chorus: And I thank you for the love it took to let me see your eyes.
Thank you for the love you gave, to make me realize
That it was me who turned my back, me who walked away
And I thank you for your love, dear Jesus, to take me back today
Verse 2: A good friend passed on just the other day
Tears started slow, but then they rolled
The pain fell on me like a dark and empty room
I felt so lonely, felt so cold
Bridge 2: Then I looked up and asked you
Where've you been? Where'd you go?
You looked at me with love in your eyes
Said, "Child, don't you know?
"I've been here right beside you
Standing with you all the time
Through trials, troubles, pain and fear
I'll never leave you behind."
Chorus
Verse 3: Then I looked into your eyes
I saw that you'd be standing here with me
Throughout eternity
You saved me by amazing grace
Given by the nail-scarred hands that paid the price upon that day
Every time that I fall down
Your loving arms come pick me up again
And you set me free from sin
Lord, I'll never understand
But I'll forever fall upon my face and praise your name
Chorus
Chorus
Thank you for your love, dear Jesus
Thank you for your love
