Story Behind the Song
Up in Arms
This song wrote itself nearly first draft, around the early 1990s from a stream of thought coming out of similar though not identical experience. The form it took even fell into place as I wrote it and I was struck by the fact I could repeat the chorus five times and it still felt like it belonged. A good hook song, I thought. The original draft has a few lines through a few verses with rewrite underneath, and the music for it developed a little more in my head over time (including harmonica) but basically it has been the same since it was born and didn't seem to be an ugly child. So I've dressed it up as nicely as I can and am sending it out into the cold, cruel, critical world to see if it can survive.
Lyrics
Up In Arms
There she goes. What's the use?
She's up in arms again
Trouble is the arms she's in ain't mine
She's got her mind made up she's a woman of the world
But whose world is she in this time?
I ought to have the right to ask her where she's been
But if I do she labels it a crime
There she goes. What's the use?
She's up in arms again
Trouble is the arms she's in ain't mine
I could tell her that I don't love her anymore
But she'd know that it wasn't true
If I tried to leave her she would wind up at my door
Telling me we could start anew
There she goes. What's the use?
She's up in arms again
Trouble is the arms she's in ain't mine
I don't make the grade for her society
I flunk out 'cause I don't have a dime
She bleeds every penny. then tells me I'm too poor
If not for her, I'd be doing fine
There she goes. What's the use?
She's up in arms again
Trouble is the arms she's in ain't mine
I could tell her that I don't love her anymore
But she'd know that it wasn't true
If I tried to leave her she would wind up at my door
Telling me we could start anew
There she goes. What's the use?
She's up in arms again
Trouble is the arms she's in ain't mine
